The Arctic Shudder 1984

There was no Arctic Shudder. There was Arctic Rudder, and a print shop that misread the order. They couldn't afford to reprint. Wore the shirts anyway. Three weeks later people were asking for "the Arctic Shudder shirt" at gigs and the band changed their name. For a month it felt like something was finally happening - bigger rooms, a write-up in a Phoenix weekly, a booker in Albuquerque who returned calls. By 1984 they'd been on the road for two summers and the typo was the closest they'd come.

It wasn't enough. The decision to stop was made between two of the band members in a motel parking lot in Barstow while the bass player was inside paying for the room. They canceled the tour and went home. The desert photo is from the printer's stock catalog. None of them had ever been to the desert.
